Yes, it's quite possible, but you have to become familiar with writing extension functions. With Saxon this means using Java and JDBC. There are example extensions in Saxon to *write* to a database via a JDBC driver (I actually use Microsoft Access for testing), and it's not hard to extrapolate from these to query a database via SQL SELECT statements.
