maybe I'm missing something, but if you need to sue , there is probably a better way to design it.
try using stylesheets and padding:
<html>
<head>
<style type="text/css">
SPAN.padded {
padding-right: 4em;
}
</style>
<body>
This is a sentence where <span class="padded">These words</span> are highly padded on the right.
</body>
</html>
