position of page number

My xsl is as follows ...

fo:root xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format">

		</fo:simple-page-master>

                 <fo:simple-page-master master-name="leftPage"

					odd-or-even="even"
                                        text-align="start"/>
			</fo:repeatable-page-master-alternatives>

......

The aim is that every rightPage should have the even page number in the
right-hand position on the page.

While every leftPage should have the odd page number in the left-hand
position.

BUT instead the page number appears in the left-hand position regardless -
Any suggestions?
