Further more, if you are writing out xml and do this then the resulting file is not well formed and result in a fatal error in any XML parser unless a suitable dtd is also specified. Since <xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes">&nbsp;</xsl:text> has all these problems, and it is so much easier to type   that has none of them, it isn't usually a good idea to suggest to people that they use this method.
