There are 12800 r elements.

is the contents of the <termX> element.

I eventually resolved it with
 <xsl:sort select="m655/*[last()]"/>

which I was quite surprised to find worked!

The functionality is to sort by bubbling up lower numbers,
giving a level sort which might be depicted as
  term10 term4 term3
  term 9 term8 term7
  term 3 term 2

This would be the case for successive part records of

<r>
   ..
  <m655>
    <tag>
    <term1>
     ...
    <term10>

<r>
   ..
  <m655>
    <tag>
    ...
    <term3>
    <term4>

etc.

I.e. it sorted on the last one, irrespective of what 'number'
was present for X in termX.

I'm nearly there, just need to find out how to do it for
lower level groupings.
