note that "work" means that not only that the file is found, but that
relative links from there work. If you use \ then as Tom commented the
system might decide it's an opaque uri type, but then the rules for
resolving relative links (basically remove everything after the last /
to get the base, then append the relative uri, and remove .. and
. sections) don't apply if the base URI has \ rather than /.

So if you use \ you have no reason to expect relative links to work.
If the system changes \ to / for you as a silent error recovery, taht's
possibly nice of it, but you shouldn't rely on it.
