retrieving checked child nodes
>I want to find all the child nodes containing the string "string1"

do you mean all descendents, or all descendents that are called child,
or all descendents that are called child1?
your example is not well formed, so it is hard to know what you mean:
<child1>value33string3value33</child>

But maybe you want

select="//child1[contains(.,'string1')]"

David
