This is basically a grouping problem. The secret is to think of the problem not as working by "closing the logical structure at the right place", but by correctly identifying which nodes go into which logical structure, and pulling just those nodes in when you create it.

Keys are great for this. Attributes are a bit of a red herring: they make your problem different only in that you will be using them to help identify your key values.
