I'm not sure if i got your problem right, but it seems, i had similar
problem in JScript:

nodes.item(i).xml returned "<" as "&lt;", while
nodes.item(i).text returned "<" as "<".

I my particular case it was enough to switch to the "text" property. Maybe
this will give you some ideas.
