will test true if the parent is not a field or if the parent field has no field elements preceding it (meaning among the elements that open and close before it, which doesn't include its ancestors). "not(../preceding-sibling::field)" is almost the same test, and is preferable from some points of view. In particular, you should use preceding-sibling if you know all your field elements will be at the same level. Cheers, Wendell
