This is a meta-FAQ. In the XSLT Recommendation Chapter 1, the 10th
paragraph says "XSLT makes use of the expression language defined by
[XPath] for selecting elements for processing, for conditional
processing and for generating text." See

So your answer is in the XPath Recommendation.
