Assuming that by "empty node" we mean an element having no child nodes, then the
following modification of the identity transformation does the job:
<xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
<xsl:output method="xml" indent="yes" />
<xsl:template match="@*|node()">
<xsl:if test="not(self::* and not(node()))">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()" />
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:if>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
Cheers,
Dimitre Novatchev.
