that selects all elements called detailedDescription that are not in a
namespace.

But your document has


  <Root name="D2" type="D2" xmlns="http://www.xyz.com/yyy/Plan">
     <detailedDescription>D2</detailedDescription>

so the element is in the namespace http://www.xyz.com/yyy/Plan"

so add xmlns:P="http://www.xyz.com/yyy/Plan" to your xsl:stylesheet,
then go

<xsl:copy-of select="document('d3.xml')//P:detailedDescription"/>


This is normal XPath behaviour, nothing to do with the fact that this is
not the main input document.
