xalan has a node-set extension function but it won't help you here.
after
<xsl:variable name="peerSelect">
<xsl:if test="$peerSearch = 'NextYear' ">
ComparisonPe/Yr2
</xsl:if>
<xsl:if test="$peerSearch = 'NextQuarter' ">
ComparisonPe/Qtr2
</xsl:if>
</xsl:variable>
peerSelect is a result tree fragment containing the text node
"
ComparisonPe/Yr2
"
(or ComparisonPe/Qtr2) and including the white space.
It does not contain the nodes selected by that XPath.
I think you just want
<xsl:variable name="peerSelect"
select="ComparisonPe[$peerSearch = 'NextYear']/Yr2 |
ComparisonPe[$peerSearch = 'NextQuater']/Qtr2 "/>
Then the variable contains th erequested nodes and you can do
<xsl:value-of select="$peerSelect/PEER1" />
