Displaying n items at a time

I know this should be basic knowledge but I can't seem
to make it work.  Here is the original XSL file:

I am trying to make the contents of the ROOT/ROW level

display n items at a time depending on user input.  I
have two questions:

1) Can I pass a parameter (variable) from my ASP page
to the XSL which does formatting for the XML file? 
2) What changes do I need to make at the ROOT/ROW
level to display n items at a time and not all at
once.
