My fault, gentlemen. It was in the FAQ. The problem was that in my XSL file I did not define the encoding. When I added encoding="iso-8859-1" to the output line, everything worked.

Sorry for the list clutter!

No, he's seeing utf-8 in a utf-8 unaware editor/environment.

But you're right, it is a FAQ.
