docbook umlaute
Hi,

if have created a simple xml file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<book id="simple">
  <title>Testbook</title>
  <author>Janning Vygen</author>
  <chapter>
      <title>Umlaute</title>
      <para>deutsche Umlaute: ä ö</para>
  </chapter>
</book>

and a simple xsl file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
  <xsl:output method="xml" encoding="iso-8859-1"/>
  <xsl:template match="/">
     <xsl:copy-of select="*"/>
  </xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

if i call xalanC it returns:
XSLException Type is : TranscodingException

so i replaced in the XML file the german umlaute with entities:
<!DOCTYPE book [
 <!ENTITY auml "&#228;">
 <!ENTITY ouml "&#246;">
]>

and replaced the german umlaute with entities:

<para>deutsche Umlaue: &auml; &ouml;</para>

But still XalanC says:
XSLException Type is : TranscodingException

What can I do next, why it is so difficult. why cant i just use german
umlaute...

Janning
