That last sentence should probably go into a FAQ :-)

Why not just add a template for the "a" element?

  <xsl:template match="a">
    <a href="{@href}">
      <xsl:apply-templates/>
    </a>
  </xsl:template>

(or a more complex one to handle name as well as or instead of href).
