Which is strange as one of the main points about declarative programming
is that it is (supposed to be) more natural. Are people really so 
infected by exposure to C or java or whatever that what was natural now
becomes strange?

No usually they are told to use count() or xsl:number or position()
or some other construct that the language provides.
