This is using the DOM to modify the stylesheet, it is more natural to
declare the variable using <xsl:param rather than <xsl:variable and then
just pass in the parameter using teh functions provided.


But I would guess taht what you are doing wrong is modifying the
stylesheet so that it says

<xsl:variable name="var" select="xxx" />

but that sets $var to the result of selecting the Xpath xxx ie the value
of the xxx element node.

What you want is
<xsl:variable name="var" select="'xxx'" />
                                 ^   ^
which sets var to the string xxx
