Today I'm mostly using javax.xml.transform
(jaxp1.1.jar, crimson.jar and xalan.jar).

Output with <xsl:output method="xml" encoding="UTF-8"/>
       is the same as the input,
Output with <xsl:output method="html" encoding="UTF-8"/>
       the HTML entity &beta;

My question is: NS4 doesn't like β etc entities from
the latter, and doesn't like <closed-elements/> from the
former: I *have* to support NS4.....

Does anyone have any ideas, please?  I just want to catch
the entity to substitute it for an image anyway....
