are you sure about that? x4D is 77 which is unicode/ascii capital M.


Are you using the XML or text output method?
What encoding are you using to output?

If you do need to output an escape character, then you probably should
use the text output method as otherwise your system is always allowed to
output the character as &....; notation whatever you do.

If you use the text output method you need to choose an output encoding
that is supported by your processor and which encodes character 
as one byte with the given value. (This doesn't include latin-1 or utf-8)
