xsl problem

the problem is that if in database if in (role name) field if there are more or three 
same name(role name)   then in report i want single repeated name but
the following code is not working.

<xsl:param name="y"/>
<xsl:variable name="x" select="rowset/row/ROLE_NAME/@value"/>
 <xsl:for-each select="rowset/row">         
            	
<xsl:choose>
	<xsl:variable name="y" select="ROLE_NAME/@value"/>
	<xsl:when test="$y==$x">
		---------
	</xsl:when>
	<xsl:otherwise>
		<xsl:variable name="x" select="ROLE_NAME/@value"/>
		<xsl:value-of select="$x"/>
	</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>
</xsl:for-each>
