remove xml declaration
Both of these worked.  I'll probably go with the text one.

(I wish I had checked my inbox more carefully before I reposted this 
question.  Looks like my mail was delayed for a 1/2 a day or so.)

Actually, if you're producing RTF, then you shouldn't be outputting
using the XML method anyway: you're producing text, not XML, so use:

<xsl:output method="text" />

and the XSLT processor won't output an XML declaration because it
knows that it's not XML anyway! :)
