xsl translating umlaut

I have a related problem....
I modified Normans Docbook Stylesheets such that I can generate Latex as
well as HTML from the same Docbook source. Being german I occasionally
would like to have an umlaut character in my documents. How would I make
the switch automatically that in the HTML output I have an 'ä' for ä
and in the Latex output a '\"a' for ä ??

As soon as I put constructs like the following
...
  <!ENTITY auml '\"a' >
....
in my document, I obviously have it in both Latex and HTML. Any
suggestions?

Best regards,
Gerhard Stenzel
