'parent::node()' returns an empty >node-set when applied to the document element, while '..' doesn't. XT >behaves the same. Looks as though this was a bug that has been fixed in more recent releases of Saxon. Saxon 5.5.1 gives the same, correct, result, whether parent::node() or .. is used.
