<xsl:variable name="preferred">
   <xsl:call-templates select="get-preferred"/>
</xsl:variable>

<xsl:template name="get-preferred">
   <xsl:apply-templates select="//item" mode="get"/>
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="item[$preferred]" mode="get">
   <xsl:value-of select="."/>
</xsl:template>
