Gary,

The quote you give from the XPath Recommendation doesn't actually use the 
term "document node", so I fail to see how it supports or demonstrates your 
point.

I have just checked the XPath Recommendation again and the term "document 
node" does not occur, as far as I can tell.

See my post "Roots" of Confusion introduced at W3C for a more detailed 
description of, at least part of, the basis for the confusion. I sent it just 
before seeing your comment.
