Xalan-Java already offers the following tracing options:
-TT (Trace the templates as they are being called)
-TG (Trace each result tree generation event)
-TS (Trace each selection event)
-TTC (Trace the template children as they are being processed)

Since it's open source, you can add more if you like.
You could even contribute the expanded code to the Xalan project.
