which looks like a similar issue to me.

What is it that position() is actually counting? 

In the context of apply-templates, it counts total templates applied,
not templates of a certain type matched. (or something like that)

And although I used two terms incorrectly in my reply, ;-) I think the
previous postings might give you somewhere to start from.
