it may be useful to elaborate on the docbook architecture for those who
haven't been exposed to it yet.

Why was the Oasis docbook generated with DSSSL?

FWIW, http://nwalsh.com/ and http://docbook.org/ are both
created that way. http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/ is also
created from XML, but is currently genereated with DSSSL.
