Which XSL processor are you using? I'm currently experimenting with LotusXSL which supports the passing of parameters into stylesheets. Using this mechanism you could pass in some sort of debug flag and surround your diagnostic statements with xsl:if statements. I should add that I haven't actually tried passing parameters yet but the documentation says they are supported and it seems pretty reliable.
