what is a responded variable
Thanks to all that responded. Setting the variable
between the xsl:stylesheet and the first xsl:template
solved my problem.

Based on that, why didn't setting the variable in the
root template make it in scope for all the child templates?

PS: Sorry for the duplicate post. For some reason I got a
"Returned Mail: Message Could Not Be Delivered" response
(each time) and only found out later that the postings made it
    to the list!
