I don't have any musical background but this sounds like a fun project. Ken Holman mentioned that his DSSSL-based solution generated tables, but added that this didn't work very well. I wonder if it might not be more practical to generate monospace text (HTML <PRE> tags), and positioning the leftmost character of the chords to sync up with the leftmost character of the corresponding lyrics.
