If they really are single characters then you could categorise them using
translate(),
e.g. <xsl:variable name="category"
 select='translate($textg, "ABCDEFGHIGKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ",
"VLLLVLLLLMMM.........")'/>
<xsl:if test="$category='V'">...
