If I take the XML you posted and close the advertisement and DATA
elements then take the XSL and put it in <xsl:template match="DATA">
then XT produces

bash-2.01$ xt ad.xml ad.xsl
 -- This doesn't work
                Match
        bash-2.01$ 

which is what I would expect, ie it does work and the matching
attributes (ie 'contact1') have been found.

What did you get? or perhaps the question  should be,
What did you want?
