Mike,
     I realize I could use entity references in the source document to get
my desired output, but I don't want to. :-)  For the same reason that I
would not want to have to scatter entity references throughout scripting
code.  There would be too many of them, and it would no longer be readable.
That's why I chose to use CDATA sections; to retain readability.
     So I am looking for solutions to output non-HTML syntax on the
backend, rather than solutions for the front end.
