Since you are doing different templates for thing1 and thing2
can you use?

<xsl:for-each select="thing1">
  ...processing for a thing1 element...
</xsl:for-each>

<xsl:for-each select="thing2">
  ...processing for a thing2 element...
</xsl:for-each>
