Re problems with <BR> -- I've been solving this by a global-replace of <BR> with <BR></BR>, taking advantage of the fact that HTML ignores tags (such as /BR) that it doesn't recognize. I'm not convinced this is any better than the <BR /> or <BR hack="ugly"/> tricks. The right long-term answer might be to avoid the question by defining XSL in terms of operations on the Document Object Model. DOM is being designed to support both XML and HTML documents, and theoretically could support other document languages as well.
