Your conclusion is: Xquery doesn't get close to the mature capabilities of relational database systems when it comes to dealing with relational data! Well of course it doesn't. It's not designed to do that job. Data is naturally hierarchical, and XQuery is good at processing it in its hierarchical form. If you insist on artificially reducing both your input and output into flat tables, losing all the hierarchic structure in the process, then you must expect that it will be more difficult to manipulate. The problem is, you're so immersed in relational thinking that you don't see the artificiality of it any more.
