[ANN] XML for the Long Haul: Issues in the Long-term
Preservation of XML and Balisage 2010 Details
Organizers of the Balisage Markup Conference 2010 have published a
complete program listing, as well as details about the Pre-conference Symposium:
http://www.balisage.net/2010/Program.html
http://www.balisage.net/longhaul/LHProgram.html

Balisage is an annual conference devoted to the theory and practice of descriptive
markup and related technologies for structuring and managing information.
Balisage 2010 will be held August 3-6, 2010 in Montreal, Canada, preceded
by an August 2 International Pre-conference Symposium 'XML for the Long
Haul: Issues in the Long-term Preservation of XML."

People who create, store, query, or serve XML expect it to live a very
long time. XML is platform- and application-independent, and by and
large it is platforms and applications that vanish. If by encoding
information in XML we have freed it from dependency on specific
platforms or applications, have we succeeded in ensuring that the XML
can live long into the future? Or is there more to it than using XML?
How can we best ensure that our data, all our data, and its semantics
survive this year, next year, ten years? into the next millennium?

"XML for the Long Haul" one-day symposium will include these topics:

 - Markup of social science data
 - Sustainability of linguistic resources
 - Case studies from PubMed Central and Portico, two very large
      journal article archives
 - Scholarly editions in a digital world
 - Implications of XML semantics for archive standards
 - Metadata for product data

Balisage Program for August 3-4:
"The high cost of risk aversion";
"Multi-channel eBook production as a function of diverse target device
capabilities"; "gXML, a new approach to cultivating XML trees in Java";
"Grammar-driven markup generation"; "Java integration of XQuery: An
information unit oriented approach"; "Reverse modeling for domain-driven
engineering of publishing technology"; "Managing semantics in XML

and interaction design"; "Refining the taxonomy of XML schema languages:
Categorizing XML schema languages"; "Schema component paths for schema
analysis"; "A packaging system for EXPath"; "A streaming XSLT processor."

Balisage Program for August 5-6:

quite work and why you might want to use it nevertheless"; "Freestyle
Markup Language"; "Multi-structured documents and the emergence of
annotations vocabularies"; "Processing arbitrarily large XML using a
