I believe from context Robert was referring to XQuery implementations at the DB/Server level which can take advantage of server side indexing etc. I think thats what he means by "runs natively" Compared to XSLT implementations which read the document into the "client" then process it. Even given this though, I think its a stretch to say its universally more efficient. For example I have real world test cases of XQuery which run on a high performance XML server "natively" and run 5x slower then the exact same XQuery running in the client (on the same machine). So I can assert that just because something runs "natively on the server" doesn't always mean its faster. It *should be* though ! But its not always true in reality. -David David A.
