Yes you can do that, which is probably the nicest from the users point of view, however it does mean (probably) that the entire output has to be saved up in a variable and reprocessed which has memory implications and also stops the serialiser serialising the output before the (main) transform has finished. Restrictions such as the one not allowing you to add attribute nodes after child nodes, are designed to allow the system to serialise the output without ever actually building the result tree.
