replace()

This is *very* embarrasing! I had confused replace() with translate() 
(which does exactly what I want). Sorry! Thank you for the gentle 
correction.

Please read the definition of the replace function at 

http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath-functions/#func-replace

it replaces the complete pattern, not the individual characters in it.
