Very much so. Unfortunately, Microsoft added the Windows API to their
basic Java platform and continued to call it Java, with the obvious
intent of making the majority of Java code become, in practice, tied to
their platform. The lawsuit that resulted did make them stop, and they
abandoned a technology they couldn't own or control.

Yup. Do you think there's a clear contender for that rôle as a language
