One of the strengths of XML is social: it enables people who don't
think of themselves as programmers to do significant text processing.

Another strength is that XML gives the author control over the format,
not the application programmer.

Mark loses both of these - and at the same time appears, as far as i
can tell, weak in the area of <term><em>mixed</em> content</term>.

A variant of JSON that allowed element notation might go further. You
quickly end up with something like JSONiq i suspect, once you add
expressions inside elements.
