Clearly XML has given the IT industry in general a good solid platform to build on in many areas. This should be applauded: as a standard XML has done its job with aplomb. For those looking to the next generation of systems which blend rich content with rich user experience then I think we still have a ways to go. Like a pendulum, popular interest has currently swung away from structure to the presentation side of things (evidence: html5, css3, jquery plugins, etc.). What is the backswing going to look like? I genuinely think we are yet to see the tip of the iceberg on this. My earlier comment about Google Docs for XML was only half in jest. There is a pent up demand for this type of thing that will need addressing. Kids of today will grow up expecting iPhone-like rich cloud services that let them ignore the technology and just work the way they are used to working. I believe XML would still be a fantastic candidate as the underpinning storage/communication format for the next generation of services. Even if it is the unsexy part :) -Gareth
