agree with your sentiments completely ... though I would add that most
of the issues come from expectation.

A desire for pure data driven UI is akin to what Ford did for the
factory line ... we are trying to cheapen and automate every aspect of
developing software and lose something by tooling for 100% generic
versus building up something 100% custom.

We also have a serious mismatch in terms of expectations ... end users
expect to get a custom hot rod with laker pipes and nitrous oxide but
are surprised when they get a Model T Ford in black.

There seems to be a fundamental tension between creating standards,
generic data, generic software to only highly constrain the
application at the end ... but such trade-offs are commonplace in
engineering.

I don't know how to address the expectation gap with end users ... I
blame marketing (its both correct and adequate an excuse, its like
taking the fifth in the states).
