When I was an undergraduate I had the choice at one point of FORTRAN or Algol. I got an Algol book out of the library and went to the room where the card punches were. In the book, keywords were in bold. Try as I might I couldn't see how to enter bold keywords and italic variable names, and I gave up and went back to FORTRAN.
