what kind of ascii have you in mind? (www-math is probably a better
place to ask)

For example for docbook normally you are generating html or pdf in which
case mathml may not need converting at all (html and xsl-fo may
renderers understand mathml) html or you may need to convert to TeX-in-ascii

Explicitly going from mathml to ascii there is

http://dpcarlisle.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/pmathmlascii

But that produces

infinity
   ----
    \
     ) x
    / i
   ----
  i = 0

which is fun but unless you have fond memories of 1980's terminal
interfaces to computer algebra systems, perhaps not so useful.

So perhaps you meant

\sum+{i=0}^\infty x_i

or

The sum from 0 to infinity of x sub i

You could get (something equivalent to) the first of those, TeX syntax,
from
